CHALLENGES: A 240-place, 12-unit daycare center is substantial for its intended purpose. When the goal is to design a pleasant, socially, pedagogically, and functionally sound environment, the functional concept becomes crucial. On the other hand, essential requirements also include efficient space utilization and cost-effective and technically feasible construction.

SOLUTIONS: The daycare center is divided into six clusters, each with facilities for two groups. Each group has its own “home base.” Other cluster spaces are shared by two groups. There are multiple small group rooms in each cluster. Each cluster has direct access to all common areas, including a multipurpose hall and a dining area, which provide access to special small group rooms for all children. The building’s diverse spatial scales support socially and pedagogically appropriate activities.
